One of the things I hear most when I am giving a workshop on stress management, is that people struggle to set boundaries and to say no. People tell me that they have trouble finding the right words. While "no thanks" is a complete sentence, I understand that people do not want to offend anyone and simply saying "no thanks" can feel a bit curt.
As the holidays are approaching quickly and invitations are plentiful, I wanted to share 20 polite ways to decline a holiday invitation. And if you are on the fence and need time to think about it, telling someone you need to get back to them is acceptable as well. Still not sure? - I have something else planned for that day, so I won't be able to come.
- Thanks for the invitation, but I'm unable to attend.
- I have a prior commitment, so I won't be able to accept your invitation.
- I'm afraid I can't make it, but I hope you all have a great time.
- I won't be able to join you, but I appreciate the invitation.
- Unfortunately, I have another engagement and won't be able to attend.
- I'm unavailable on that date, so I have to decline.
- I'm sorry, but I won't be able to make it to the event.
- Thanks for inviting me, but I won't be able to come this time.
- I appreciate your kindness, but I have to say no to this invitation.
- I have a conflicting appointment, so I won't be able to join.
- I won't be able to attend this time, but I hope we can plan something in the future.
